The Woodlanders
Published in Audio Cassette by Penguin Audiobooks (April, 1997)
Authors: Thomas Hardy and Crawford Logan
Average review score:

A Beautiful Novel of Love and Social Class
This novel has received less attention in the U.S. than some of Hardy's other works, such an The Mayor Of Casterbridge, w ith its theme of the individual in tragic conflict with fate. The Woodlanders dwells on the needless sufferings and unhappiness brought on by class privelege. This is a subject always sure to raise suspicions of membership in the Khmer Rouge or the North Korean Secret Police here in the holyland of capitalism. But it is a beautiful work of art. Henry James and Jacques Barzun sneered at it because of its attacks on the upper classes. But that is a mark in its favor. Anything opposed by those two must be on the side of progress and human emancipation.

A Beautiful Novel of Love in a Class-bound Society
Unlike some of Hardy's other classic works, such as The Mayor of Casterbridge, with its theme of "the individual" against "fate," The Woodlanders has received little attention in this country. Perhaps that is because it deals so strongly with the themes of class privelege and class conflict, usually associated in this holy land of capitalism with the Khmer Rouge and Stalin. But it is a magnificent and rewarding work of art. Jacques Barzun and Henry James sneered at it because of its hostile treatment of the upper classes, but that is a mark in its favor. Anything opposed by those two must stand for progress and human emancipation.

Perfectly lovely
This is one of my favourite Hardy novels. As some others have noted, it's not one of the "big 5" but certainly worth reading. Hardy's descriptions of the woodlands are beautiful, and I found the ending to be one of his most unpredictable. I wouldn't recommend reading it if you are feeling down, as the ending is sooooo wonderfully tragic (hehe), or if you're not a fan of Hardy's prose style, but otherwise it's a wonderful read. Very personal as well. I got the feeling it was written just for me :)

The Sinking of the Titanic
Published in Paperback by Seattle Miracle Pr Inc (January, 1997)
Authors: Bruce M. Caplan and Logan Marshall
Average review score:

Dramatic, Emotional Titanic Book
Part way through the book I found myself thinking, 'Gee, I hope they can save the Titanic'! Told mostly from first-hand accounts of survivors, this is an engrossing read, and Marshall pulls off a nice bit of imagery about the way the sea looked after the tragedy.

"The Sinking of the Titanic" floats along beautifully.
"The Sinking of the Titanic" is a 200 page gem that quickly gives the reader a quasi BA in 1912 history and mores. It is an easy read, with thrilling anecdotes, personal conquests and terrible failures.

At the conclusion of the narrative, I was motivated to discuss the Titanic with all who would listen, and some who would not. The BA I've received is no BS. This book is factual, interesting, and terribly addictive

Best Titanic Book I've Ever Read!
I really enjoyed this book. The authors descriptions bring the tragedy to life. The idea that the Titanic was on fire before it left England fascinated me. I've read more than 20 books about the Titanic, and I think this one is the best!

Michael Bolton: The Passion, Secrets, Soul & Truths
Published in Hardcover by Frederick Fell Publishers (November, 1997)
Authors: Layne A. Seeloff, Elizabeth Seib, Margaret Eaton, Joyce Logan, and Liz Seib
Average review score:

WE LOVE YOU, MICHAEL...BUT NOT THIS BOOK
We are of dissenting opinion here. True, the book is loaded with facts that we didn't know before,...but being absolute DIEHARD fans of Sir Bolton outside of listing albums and songs, correct syntax, every plug for Joyce's fan club,...and the attitude in general that all Michael Bolton is...is BEEFCAKE! Our preference for a book about Michael Bolton is MICHAEL BOLTON by Lee Randall, which delves more into his career and early hardships,...and whose binding holds up more than 2 days. Michael is a reputed perfectionist-but this book is far from perfect. By all means, PLEASE, get Secret Of The Lost Kingdom and his albums (including LOVE SHOULDN'T HURT)-they're woth every cent. This one...we're not so sure

A MUST FOR ANY MICHAEL BOLTON FAN
I AM A BIG FAN OF MICHAEL BOLTON AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY FAN WHO HASN'T ALREADY READ IT. I LOVED THE A TO Z ON MICHAEL AND THE GREAT PICTURES THAT WERE IN THE BOOK. EVERY THING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MAN AND HIS MUSIC YOU ARE SURE TO FIND IT HERE.

An absolute MUST for any fan of THE VOICE!!!
Finally a book that has all the true info and fabulous picture of this great artist. Every time I pick it up I learn just a little more about the man and his passions. I have been a fan for a number of years and have often wondered about the little things like " If Michael had a pet, what would it be?" Now I know. Thankyou for a priceless treasure trove of FACTS. It seems the authors had as much fun researching and writing this book as I am reading it.

The Sinking of the Titanic & Great Sea Disasters: Thrilling Stories of Survivors with Photographs and Sketches
Published in Paperback by Regent Press (June, 1998)
Author: Logan Marshall
Average review score:

Comparing book with the Memorial Edition of 1912
I find the reviews and the editor of the corrent listed book "Sinking of the Titanic Thrilling Stories Told by Survivors" interesting. My own copy is Blue Cloth with the same type of picture on the cover only the ship is going in the direction of the spine.

My copy is called: MEMORIAL EDITION SINKING OF THE TITANIC THRILLING STORIES TOLD BY SURVIVORS and story authored by Jay Henry Mowbray, Ph.D..,LL.D. and published by The Mintor Company, Harrisburg, Pa. Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1912, by Geo. W. Burton, The Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington D.C., U.S.A.

This is a very interesting likeness to my own copy and if it is as interesting to read, is excellent study of human nature.

Parent's Copy
My father, before retiring, was an insurance saleman. Sometime in the early '60's, (I am now 48), a customer gave him what was an original hard-copy edition of this book (published in 1912). Although the cover isn't in the greatest shape, it is still usable. It was this book and the early '50's movie, Titanic, with Barbara Stanwick and Clifton Webb, that started a 40 some year interest in the events surrounding the Titanic, before, during and after her sinking. My interest has at least remained the same or increased.

I find that the book has many interesting black & white pictures and towards the end lists other sea disasters up until that time.

It also has a some information on the investigation of the sinking in it.

If for no other reason, the fact that it came out the same year as the sinking is worthy of interest.

Before the original
I have recently come across an "Advance Copy" of Logan Marshall's original book "The Sinking Of The Titanic And Great Sea Disasters". This is before the original was completed. It also contains complete bulk order sheets in the back of the book. The book states that the material in the book may be corrected or revised in completed book. I would appreciate any info that anyone could send me on this book, I cannot seem to find out anything about it. If anyone has any info. Please email me at rickcrispen@hotmail.com Thank You!

The Buffalo Creek Disaster: How the Survivors of One of the Worst Disasters in Coal-Mining History Brought Suit Against the Coal Company--And Won
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Random House (March, 1977)
Author: Gerald M. Stern
Average review score:

If you're in law school read this!
A fabulous book for two reasons. It chronicles a disaster that is virtually unknown beyond the state of West Virginia. Secondly, it's a great tool for any law student in a Civil Procedure class. Forget about "A Civil Action" or "Erin Brockovich", this book best depicts the struggles of those who suffered, both the victims and the lawyers who fought for the people in the Buffalo Creek region.

There Are Good Attorneys . . .
My Civil Proceedure Prof. assigned this to us over Christmas Break so we could become familiar with "piercing the corporate veil", which merely refers to the rare legal opportunity to cut through a corporation's legal armour and attack some of the meat and money, i.e. personal assets of the officers. This only happens when there is extreme wrong doing by those suits running the business, and if you want to know what extreme worngdoing is, this is the book that will lay it out for you, pretty as a penny.
I have to admit, I was dreading reading this book, as the holidays were a sweet time to escape the stressful activities of law school. So when "Harold", our WonderBread/uptight, D.C., in the process of divorce, Napoleonic law professor assigned this reading, I was not too thrilled.
But once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. This is the story that makes good people want to become good lawyers.
The story is about a coal mining disaster, a preventable, mind-reeling, man-made disaster and how a dedicated attorney wades through the litigation process, extracting painful stories from the survivors, and skillfully uses hard work, pit bull clenched determination, the legal system and a little luck to persevere over a greedy, thoughtless, and culpable corporation. I hope those guys fighting Enron read this.
A great read, even if you have no legal aspirations and like a good, meaty story with a real-life happy ending.

Lawyering down in the pits
Jerry Stern's account of the litigation over the Buffalo Creek dam disaster ought to be read by every wannabe trial lawyer so that he or she will understand the tremendous creativity real lawyering, particularly lawyering down in the pits, requires.

The real practice of law requires vision and courage, which this book amply illustrates. Stern and his team from Arnold and Porter took on the near impossible case, armed only with the real tools of our trade, the words and ideas that form the arguments that shape the law.

And yet this is not just the story of courageous plaintiffs' lawyers, it is about the truly great defense lawyers on the other side, in particular Zane Grey Staker, whose tenacity and command of the language and of his case, gave the A & P lawyers a great and fair fight, and of the United States District Judge, whose role was not only to provide each side with "the cold neutrality of an impartial judge" but who understood that proper case management plays a critical role in achieving substantial justice.

Damsel in the Rough: Amazon Warrior Sarmation Story
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (June, 2001)
Authors: Ann Mary Tempesta and Sheila R. Logan
Average review score:

Fantastic!
I stepped in to buy, thinking this was a chancy sci-fi story by an unknown. (What the hell purchase.) To my surprise, this book was terrific! A woman from New York gets shipped to the past in the early part of the Roman Empire. Her goals? To get back to New York and the future, a.s.a.p. But she soon finds that trick is one the gods are not easily providing access. She hunts for alternate ways, including a time-travel port created by the US Government. That's when the best adventures begin, including those with wandering tribes of Amazons.

Slip into the story and soon the adventure will take you on a terrific series of creative adventures. Well-written, action packed, funny, and imaginative. Top of my list for sci-fi, fantasy reading this year.

What a Character!!!
Tasha Fidelli is a great character--as feisty and funny as any I can think of and enough reason to read the book. But the plot is so exciting--it carries you along, page to page, chapter to chapter and you just can't put it down. The descriptions of the places Tasha finds herself are fabulous and the story is involving and entertaining. If you like fantasy, this is your book. If you like time travel this is your book. If you like adventure this is your book. I'd like more please.

New Yorker in Xena Times.
The main character is Tasha M. Fidelli, a fun-loving Brooklynite in her mid-twenties. Not late teens when most of us knew everything to succeed in life. Late twenties when most of us feel the world pushing us down. Not Tasha though, she marches with "Life is forward." and works all the angles. Daddy pays, Mama prays, and Tasha sways in her own rascal adventures. One day, the gods send Tasha backwards into the age of gods, women warriors, and hardships galore. There's no hand-out from Daddy, or food mart for convenience, or charities for the down-on-their-lucks. Welcome to the Rough.

This action story builds up steam like a rollercoaster ride, painting intense situations and somehow marrying them with humor. Then, whoosh! An adventure, Amazon Warrior tale, romance, survival book, alternative medicine plug, and a great story with a murder mystery packed inside. Overall, I loved it! Keep going, Tempesta!

Logan Likes Mary Anne (Baby-Sitters Club, 10)
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (August, 1989)
Authors: Anne M. Martin and Ann Matthews Martin
Average review score:

Logan is so Cam Geary-ish
Logan Bruno... Mary Anne Spier. What can I possibly say to give justice to my absolute adoration of this book? This has always been my all time favorite of the series. It shows that a sweet personality such as Mary Anne's is appreciated by even the finest breed of stud. I love it how Mary Anne gets the dude! The only unrealistic part of the book is when Mary Anne wears her famous cities skirt to two consecutive and substantial "with Logan" functions-- the dance and the surprise party. I hate that part! And that Alan Gray orphan Annie eyes blurb is hilarious.!~ Did Claudia almost say bra strap in from of a boy!

Wonderful
I think it's great how Ann finally got some boys involved in the series. I also love Logan. I think it's great that Mary Anne was the first to have a real boyfriend. Also Mary Anne gets Tigger her cat in this book!!!!

i luv this book the most of all the BSC books
My name is Kevin and I'm 21, and I love "Logan Likes Mary Anne"! Anne Martin you're great!!! My favorite part is when one of the kids gets his hand stuck in a jar, and Mary Anne can't figure out how to get it out, but Logan does with butter. This book really tackles the issue of young teen love in a world of teen anxh and babysitting. My favorite part is that Mary Anne gets to hang out with Logan -AND- make four dollars!

Mat, Mount, and Frame It Yourself
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Pubns (January, 2003)
Authors: M. David Logan and David Logan
Average review score:

Start Up Isn't Cheap
This is a beautiful book. It's nice to look at the framed art as examples within the pages.

Now, this book claims it's easier and cheaper to do this work yourself - it is if you have a table saw and other power tools already on hand. The recommended mat cutter is almost $300.

There are lovely ideas in this book but I don't think it holds up its claim of being cheaper unless you are going to do a lot of framing work. I picked it up at the library with the idea of framing my beadwork, but with starting costs and skills to learn to do this work I'll pay for professional framing and use my time and money for beads and my own work!

If you are interested in learning to do this work, I'd say that this is a good book for you to start with. If you're an artist looking to frame your own work, think about how much time you'll be investing in learning to do this work when you could be working on your art.

Everything You Ever Needed to Know...
I can't imagine someone needing any more information than Mr. Logan has so clearly and simply provided in this excellent book. He not only discusses how to frame everything from photos to firearms but explains why different types of mats are used, how to select colors, the pros and cons of different types of frames, glazing materials, hardware, etc., etc. You are left knowing what kinds of choices to make and why. The book is heavy with illustrations and photos. I wish more how-to books (i.e. software manuals) were written so clearly and engagingly! Even if you only plan to frame one item, read this book first.

Well written - easy to understand
I had the pleasure of actually taking a class with David Logan, the author of this book. ... The book covers everything one needs to complete a mat project from start to finish.

The Unofficial Guide to London
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (January, 1900)
Author: Lesley Logan
Average review score:

Careful using the voltage converter recommendation!
Page 67 of the book tells you to buy a voltage converter and that the input to the converter should be 110 and output is 220.'

WRONG. The input voltage INTO the converter from the plug is 220 volts, OUTPUT, into the US device, is 110 volts. Be CAREFUL with that recommendation.

Otherwise, a fairly typical unoffical guide - these City guides are useless for restaurants and hotels, there are so many dozens of nice local restaurants and hotels in every city in the world [except NYC which has maybe 20 decent hotels] thast I find you can save ALOT of money and get a nicer place just looking around a little.

As for prices, BE CAREFUL to check prices for things in the USA. PAY in POUNDS and use a credit card- example is the Heathrow-London train - EurRail Same thing applies to London tube, ...

Also, use your credit card to get cash in London, even with charges for cash advances and interest for a month, you'll save on getting ripped off at airport currency bootths or banks, esp. in the USA.

Great guide!
I just purchased this book after checking out 10 different London guide books at the library. This was by far my favorite! I have never been to London before and this has been the most helpful book I have used in planning my trip. It provides the very basic information, such as what line is the correct line at customs and currency information. Additionaly, it has tons of info, such as the exact cost of an attraction, restaurant, or hotel (no vague words or symbols), nearest tube stop, what time of day to go to the site to avoid crowds, lots of insider tips (ie. to avoid lengthy security checks, leave your bags homes when visiting Houses of Parliament), and approx time you should allow to see the site (I couldn't find this info in any other book and I was specifically looking for this tidbit). It also has ratings of appeal for each age group in addition to the authors own personal rating. For example, for Site X, it might give it 2 stars for preschooler, 2 stars for grade school, 3 stars for teens, 3 stars for young adults, 4 stars for adults over 30, and 4 stars for seniors. This is perfect for family planning. There are two minor reasons I did not give this book 5 stars: the author uses its own "zone" system (zones 1-12) to group together attractions, hotels, etc. This might work perfect for other cities and is a good idea, but since London has its own official Zone system for public transportation, this can be confusing for London firsttimers like myself who are still trying to figure out London's transportation system...you have to constantly remember when the author says zone 2, he doesn't mean London's official Zone 2. I wish the author had chosen a different word than "zone" for his own groupings. Also, I could not find any info about the changing of the guards nor about the Horse Guards (perhaps I just missed it?). No tourist guide book can be considered complete without this information. Nonetheless, this is my favorite guide book thus far and will definetly be with me on my trip to London in a few weeks.

Unofficial Guide
Not quite up to the standards set by Unofficial Guides to Disney World. This reads more like a regular travel book with a bit more honest criticism than other books in the Unofficial series. The sections on museums and attractions for children are useful, but I felt that this book could have been a lot more critical and less descriptive.

Wall Street Words: An Essential A to Z Guide for Today's Investor
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (Pap) (July, 1997)
Author: David Logan Scott
Average review score:

An invaluable desktop reference guide for finance
As a recent alumnus of an Ivy League business school, I naively/arrogantly expected to find Wall Street Words of minimal use and really only purchased it because of a desire to switch careers from consulting to investment banking and a subsequent need for a reference tool in research.

To my pleasant surprise, I have found it almost indespensable. It is always within reach when I read the WSJ and I find myself consulting it regularly.

I think that the 1-star review below is quite unrealistic. While I would agree that there may be a couple of terms missing, for my money it's still the best book out there of its type. NONE of these books are exhaustive. Remember, this is neither a text book nor a course, just a reference guide.

All up, an excellent reference guide that will answer most, if not all, of your financial terms and definitions questions succintly.

The investor's "Blue Chip"...from alpha to omega
Wall Street Words, a reference book for the contemporary investor, affords a succinct, yet extensive explanation of the terms used in today's market. Author Dr. David L. Scott has directed his book toward the financial populace at all levels of expertise. The book is written practically, orderly, and aptly as it defines Wall Street's lingo. In addition, numerous financial tips contribute in-depth examples of many of the terms. I hightly recommend Wall Street Words as an excellent guide for A to Z investors!

A superb reference which clearly defines financial terms.
"Wall Street Words" has proven to be the ultimate dictionary when dealing in the financial arena. I use it continuously as a class reference when teaching students in financial planning. And require students to reference the book when they have to define a word when writing a paper associated with the class. In fact I recommend students purchase a copy for their own libary. When friends are unclear about stock market activities I always refer them to "Wall Street Words" for clarification.
